Last week before #NaNoWriMo begins!

This time next week I will be elbow deep in NaNoWriMo. It really works out good this year that November 1st is on a Saturday and we will be observing Daylight Savings Time. Not only do we get a full weekend to kick off NaNo with, but we also gain an extra hour.

Now that we are getting closer to the start, I would like to share a little about the story I’ve decided to write. My story takes place in the Kingdom of Astadar. Their technology level is a medieval equivalent, but it doesn’t take place in Earth History. This is a fantasy story, but my twist is that instead of magic, people are born with supernatural powers. Think marvel mutants in the 13th century.

When a child hits puberty they begin to manifest what they consider a gift. All gifted children are sent to the Red Cloak school to learn how to use their gifts. Those that are the strongest can then become Knights of the Red Cloak, the rest can go back to their village and live their life as they choose.

The conflict in my story is when a young Red Cloak Knight named Abraham discovers a parallel Kingdom across the ocean that treats gifts as curses. Those children that have been curses are either killed or turned into slaves. Abraham has to decided what can, and should, be done about what he discovers.

I think it’s going to be fun to merge my childhood hobby of comic book creation with my newer taste for writing fantasy. Instead of a magic system, I’ll be working with toned down super powers. No flying, no Professor X, or Superman. I want unpowered citizens to be able to give the gifted ones a struggle when needed. It’s going to be fun to balance it all out.

As a plotter, I will be using every remaining day to flesh out as many characters as I can and define the geography of my Kingdoms. I’m still stuck with the backstory of how these two Kingdoms came into existence and never came into contact with each other before this story. Or maybe I can link them somehow. This just reminds me that writing is so much fun.

Until next time…
